A School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, known as an SBAT, lets a student start paid work and formal training while still at high school. The student stays enrolled at school, works paid hours for an employer, and completes a nationally recognised qualification with NSTI at the same time.
Students can start from Year 10 with school approval. In New South Wales, SBATs are supported under the Smart and Skilled program, which heavily subsidises the cost of training for eligible students under a registered training contract.
The arrangement brings together the student, the school, the employer and the training provider, with a structured training plan setting out what is learned in the workplace and what is completed through formal training.

An Apprenticeship Network Provider registers the contract, signed by the student, parent or guardian, employer and school.
