Student Support and Well Being
Student Support and Well Being
At the National Skills Training Institute (NSTI), we are committed to providing a supportive, inclusive, and positive learning environment where every student can thrive. We understand that each learner brings unique goals, challenges, and personal circumstances, and we are here to ensure that you have the academic, personal, and wellbeing support needed to succeed throughout your training journey.
Our student support framework is designed in alignment with the Standards for RTOs 2025, which emphasise the importance of identifying individual learner needs, providing appropriate support, and maintaining student wellbeing. Whether you’re studying on campus or online, NSTI offers a range of services to help you achieve your goals — from learning and language support to wellbeing, counselling, and accessibility assistance.
We also recognise that studying while managing work, family, or personal responsibilities can sometimes be challenging. That’s why our team is dedicated to creating a safe and caring environment where you can reach out for help at any time. At NSTI, we believe that wellbeing and learning success go hand in hand — and our priority is to support you not just as a student, but as a whole person.
At NSTI, we understand that every learner brings different experiences and abilities to their studies. Our trainers and support team are here to help you develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in your chosen qualification.
LLND guidance and extra study support
All students complete a short Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment at the start of their course. This is not a test — it’s a tool that helps us understand your individual learning needs. Based on your results, we can provide tailored assistance such as extra tutoring, simplified materials, or guided reading and writing support.
Help with assessments, referencing, and digital skills
We provide guidance on how to structure written responses, prepare for practical assessments, and correctly reference your work. If you need help using the online learning platform or uploading assessments, our digital support team can walk you through each step.
Study tips
Students are encouraged to book one-on-one sessions or online check-ins with trainers whenever they need help. Trainers can assist with time management, exam preparation, and practical study strategies to help you stay on track and reduce stress during busy study periods.
We believe that learning is most effective when students feel supported, healthy, and emotionally balanced. NSTI’s wellbeing services are designed to promote positive mental health and resilience throughout your training.
Promoting positive mental health, balance, and resilience
Our team encourages open communication and provides resources to help you manage stress, maintain healthy habits, and balance your study, work, and personal life. We understand that animal care and training environments can sometimes be emotionally demanding — we’re here to help you build the resilience and coping strategies you need.
Access to internal support officers
If you’re struggling with study pressures, personal circumstances, or mental health concerns, you can speak confidentially with an NSTI Student Support Officer. They can offer guidance, provide practical strategies, and connect you with further support if required.
External helplines
We also encourage students to reach out to professional mental health organisations whenever needed.
Lifeline: 13 11 14 – 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention.
Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636 – mental health and anxiety support.
Headspace: headspace.org.au – youth mental health support and wellbeing resources.
NSTI is committed to providing an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students. We ensure that every learner has access to reasonable adjustments and support that promotes full participation in both training and assessment.
How to request reasonable adjustments
Students with a disability, medical condition, learning difficulty, or temporary impairment can request adjustments to their learning or assessment methods. This may include modified tasks, additional time, alternative assessment formats, or physical accessibility support.
Use of assistive technology or flexible delivery options
Where appropriate, NSTI provides assistive technologies or alternative learning delivery — such as online study, recorded sessions, or practical demonstrations — to ensure all students can achieve the required competency outcomes. Our trainers will work with you to develop a personalised support plan that aligns with ASQA’s inclusivity standards.
Wellbeing During Practical Training
Many of NSTI’s qualifications involve practical components in real or simulated animal care environments. Your physical and emotional wellbeing during these experiences is essential.
Self-care and safety tips for animal care environments
We emphasise safe work practices, correct handling techniques, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use to reduce the risk of injury or fatigue. Maintaining hydration, proper posture, and regular rest are key to performing at your best.
Emotional wellbeing when working with animals
Caring for animals can be deeply rewarding — but it can also bring emotional challenges, especially when dealing with sick, injured, or anxious animals. We encourage you to debrief with your trainers, peers, or support officers after challenging days and to reach out for guidance if you are feeling overwhelmed.
NSTI’s Student Support team is always ready to assist you. Whether you need help with your studies, advice on wellbeing, or technical assistance, we’re just an email or phone call away.
